Maryland can get very cold in winter, which may lead drivers to worry that their car’s engine might freeze when the temperatures plummet. There are ways you can stop your engine freezing, and if you implement them, you should be able to keep your car safe through winter.

How Do I Stop My Car Engine Freezing?

Get Your Coolant/Antifreeze Checked

If your coolant/antifreeze is of low quality, or if you don’t have enough of it in your car, then the water in the antifreeze could freeze and cause engine damage. Visit the dealer, so the mechanics can check on the antifreeze in your cooling system and replace it with a stronger mix if necessary.

Get Your Oil Checked

Visit the dealer to make sure you’re using the oil the manufacturer recommends for your car. If you use the right motor oil, then it’ll have the viscosity that your car needs, making it easier for your car to start in all different temperatures. If your oil is old, then we recommend getting it changed before the cold weather hits.

Get Your Battery Checked

As batteries get older, it becomes harder for them to powerfully start your engine in winter. The liquid inside them can be made thicker by the cold weather, and older batteries often take more of a hit than newer ones. Get your battery checked to make sure it’s in good health, and if it’s getting on in years, then consider getting it replaced.

Get Your Fuel System Checked

If water vapor or condensation gets inside your fuel tank, then it could freeze and cause problems. Get your fuel system checked to make sure there are no cracks in the tank or gas lines. You should also avoid letting the tank get more than half empty, as if your tank has more gas in it, then there’s less room for water vapor or condensation to freeze.

Get Your Car Inside

If you usually park outdoors, then get your car inside as much as possible. If you have a packed garage that you’ve been considering cleaning out so you can store your car in it, then now is the time to make room to keep your vehicle in it. If there are indoor parking structures near your home, then switch to parking in one of those instead of parking on the street if possible.

Get Your Car a Blanket

Insulation is key to keeping your engine and all the other parts under the hood warm. Consider putting a blanket over the hood if you know the temperatures are going to drop below freezing.
