Comparing the 2023 Toyota 4Runner vs. Toyota RAV4

Infotainment Tech

Both vehicles have an 8-in touchscreen infotainment system, but the RAV4 includes standard upgrades like the wireless version of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as the “Hey Toyota” voice recognition system. In the 4Runner, you’ll have wired smartphone connectivity with these systems, along with Amazon Alexa for standard voice recognition.

While you can get a larger touchscreen for the RAV4, only the 4Runner offers a premium 15-speaker JBL sound system as an upgrade. The RAV4 has a standard digital gauge cluster, a feature you won’t find in the 2023 4Runner. Both SUVs have a standard wireless hotspot and multiple USB ports. In the RAV4, you also get a household-style power outlet.

Interior Space and Convenience Features

Each of these SUVs seats five in the base model, but the 4Runner provides the option of a third row that expands passenger capacity to seven. If you go for the two-row model, you’ll get nearly 90 cu ft of total cargo space, including more than 47 cu ft behind the rear seats. In comparison, the RAV4 gives you almost 70 cu ft of room when you fold down the rear seats and 37.6 cu ft when the second row is in use.

Both the 4Runner and the RAV4 offer dual-zone automatic climate control. The RAV4 has standard remote keyless entry, while the 4Runner comes with standard in-key remote keyless entry.

Driver Assistance and Safety

Both vehicles come with standard driver assistance equipment that includes forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, rearview camera, and automatic high beams. There are also other features to add like rear-cross traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring.

Performance

The 4Runner offers a towing power of up to 5,000 lbs compared to a max of 3,500 lbs for the RAV4. The latter has a 203-hp four-cylinder engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission, while the 4Runner is equipped with a 270-hp V6 with a five-speed automatic. The 4Runner has standard rear-wheel and available four-wheel drive, with standard front-wheel and available all-wheel drive for the RAV4.
