2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid
The Toyota Highlander is a staple of the automaker's lineup, so it should come as no surprise that Toyota wanted to capitalize on its popularity by offering a hybrid version. Now in its fourth generation, this stable, reliable SUV is one of the few hybrid midsize SUVs offered. For the 2023 model year, the Highlander experiences a few small changes that make it even more appealing, especially if you're in the market for an affordable and efficient vehicle.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The 2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is offered in five trims: LE, XLE, Bronze Edition, Limited, and Platinum. The SUV's exterior varies depending on the trim selected. The Bronze Edition adds bronze-colored wheels, and the top two trims include LED projector headlights and 20-inch wheels. The Limited and Platinum trims now feature power-folding mirrors as standard equipment.
Engine (Power)
Power from the 2023 Highlander Hybrid comes from a 2.5-liter inline-four connected to an electric motor. This engine has 243 total horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. It's mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission.
Performance
While front-wheel drive is standard, adding all-wheel drive improves the SUV's traction, which can come in handy if you live in an area that experiences inclement weather. This upgrade is one of the most popular options available. Opting for all-wheel drive adds a second electric motor, but it doesn't alter the vehicle's overall power or torque rating. To enhance your driving experience, select one of the SUV's drive modes including Sport, Eco, Normal, EV, and Trail.
Interior
The 2023 Highlander Hybrid's cabin affords a practical and comfortable riding experience. The first two rows of seats are spacious, and the third row works well for children. Second-row captain's chairs come standard on all trims except the base one. With the second-row bench seat, the SUV seats a total of eight travelers, while the second-row captain's chairs lowers that number to seven. The vehicle's cargo space is just as robust, especially when you fold down the second- and third-row seats as it garners 84.3 cubic feet of space.
For infotainment, the SUV comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen display featuring new graphics and a crisper resolution, along with an option to use voice commands. This screen is paired with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa connectivity, as well as satellite radio. You can upgrade to receive a larger 12.3-inch infotainment system with navigation, wireless charging, a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, and an 11-speaker JBL premium stereo system. These upgrades will keep your passengers fully entertained and connected no matter how long they're in the SUV.
Safety Features
Toyota takes pride in outfitting its vehicles with state-of-the-art safety features, and the 2023 Highlander Hybrid is no different. It's one of the safest SUVs you can purchase. Every trim includes the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ suite of features, which includes automatic high-beam headlights, road sign detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keep assist. All trims except the base one include rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring, while the top two trims offer rear emergency braking. The SUV has full LATCH attachments on the two outboard second-row seats.
