When you want a spacious SUV with seating for seven that can handle rough terrain, the 4Runner is the model for you. This capable vehicle is one of the few truck-based SUVs remaining in the segment, which is part of what makes it so appealing for off-roading.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is a midsize SUV offered in eight trim levels, which are SR5, Trail Special Edition, TRD Sport, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, and TRD Pro. Exterior features on the base model include LED headlights, a power-operated rear window, roof rails, underbody skid plates, and 17-inch wheels. The Trail Special Edition model tacks on a roof rack and dark-painted trim and wheels for a flashy appearance.
The TRD Sport has its own sporty elements, including a hood scoop, branded trim, and firm suspension tuning. Both the TRD Off-Road and Off-Road Premium trims boast a locking rear differential and a few exterior enhancements, while the upscale Limited model has 20-inch wheels, a sunroof, and chrome exterior accents.
Power (Engine)
The eight trim levels of the 4Runner share the same 4.0-liter V-6 engine, which makes 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. It pairs with a five-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the rear wheels on all models but the TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium models, which come standard with Toyota's four-wheel-drive system. You can also upgrade the other trims to include four-wheel drive.
Performance
With its capable engine beneath the hood and plenty of off-road-ready features, the 2022 4Runner is the segment leader for those who want to explore off the beaten path. It sits higher than most other midsize SUVs in its class, and the four-wheel-drive system includes selectable driving modes that put more control in the driver's hands. The TRD Off-Road trims are particularly well-equipped for exploration and adventures.
Interior
The cabin of the 4Runner has seating for five, although you can upgrade most of the trims to include a third row to take the capacity to seven. Interior comfort features include a power-adjustable driver's seat, split-folding and reclining seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a manual climate control system with rear air vents. The base model also comes with an eight-speaker audio system with an 8-inch touch screen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, and Bluetooth connectivity. If you want a more luxurious cabin, consider choosing one of the higher trims. These models come with options like heated and ventilated front seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, keyless entry and ignition, and leather upholstery. The 4Runner can also be equipped with a premium JBL sound system, wireless device charging, and integrated navigation.
Safety Features
Every 2022 4Runner model includes an impressive suite of safety equipment, which helps to protect the driver and those around them on the road. The suite bundles forward-collision mitigation, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, a rearview camera, and lane-departure warning. With the higher trims, additional safety options include blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and front and rear parking sensors.
