2021 Toyota Tacoma
The Toyota Tacoma continues to have a loyal following of drivers who love its size and capabilities. Its TRD models make it a fun off-road toy, and it remains one of the most reliable pickup trucks on the road. The 2021 model has a new Trail Edition, and a Nightshade model adds dark trim elements and a more aggressive look. Also new for 2021, the TRD Pro models have a new Lunar Rock color available.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
Starting out the Tacoma lineup is the SR. It has 16-inch steel wheels, a composite bed, and tie-down points. The SR5 adds rear tinted windows and chrome trim elements. The Trail Edition has 16-inch TRD off-road wheels, all-terrain tires, and lockable bins in the bed, or you can step up to the TRD Sport for 17-inch alloy wheels, body-colored fender flares, a hood scoop, and heated side mirrors. The TRD Off-Road comes with 16-inch wheels, and it removes the hood scoop. Bumping up to the high-end Limited gets you 18-inch alloy wheels, a power sunroof, and a body-colored bumper and fender flares, while the new Nightshade Edition takes the Limited's features and adds black wheels, a dark chrome grille, and a black exhaust tip. The TRD Pro starts with the TRD Off-Road features and adds upgraded shocks and a thick front skid plate.
Engine (Power)
You can choose between two engines depending on which Tacoma you have. The base engine is a 2.7-liter four-cylinder with 159 horsepower that works with a six-speed automatic. For more power, choose the 3.6-liter V-6 engine that generates 278 horsepower and works with either a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission
Performance
Toyota designed the Tacoma for drivers who want to work and play. Its smaller size makes it sportier than most pickups, and it has a responsive steering system that makes it easy to drive. When equipped, it can tow up to 6,800 pounds. If you want to head off-road, the TRD models have higher ground clearance, a locking rear differential, and crawl control to get you over rough terrain with ease.
Interior
The Tacoma can fit either four or five people depending on the cab. It has a nice cabin trimmed with upscale materials and loaded with convenient features such as a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat. A 7-inch touch screen comes in the base trim, with an 8-inch touch screen in the SR5 and above, and you also get Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and Android Auto capability. Moving up through the trims adds technology features that include both a 12-volt outlet in the bed and wireless phone charging
Safety Features
All Tacoma trims and models come standard with a rearview camera and the Toyota Safety Sense P suite. This group of advanced driver aids includes a pre-collision warning system with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, dynamic radar cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, and a lane-departure warning system. A blind-spot monitor is an added safety feature for the Limited, which also gets rear parking sensors and rear cross-traffic alert.
