2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime
As one of the few plug-in hybrid compact crossovers on the market, the all-new Toyota RAV4 Prime delivers many of the same attributes found on the gas-only RAV4 but in a more eco-friendly capacity. Its two rows of comfortable seating for five passengers and an expansive list of infotainment and safety features make the 2021 RAV4 Prime a practical choice for your next ride.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
Two trims are available for the new RAV4 Prime: the SE and XSE. In 2019, the overall design of the RAV4 was reconfigured to include more aggressive styling compared to its former car-like exterior, and the RAV4 Prime's look is similar. The SE trim has 18-inch alloy wheels, while the XSE trim features a two-tone paint scheme, a moonroof, and two-tone 19-inch alloy wheels.
Engine (Power)
Power for the 2021 RAV4 Prime comes from a 134-kilowatt electric motor that sends 199 pound-feet of torque to the front axle, while a 40-kilowatt motor pushes 89 pound-feet of torque to the rear. These motors, combined with a 2.5-liter gasoline engine, produce 302 horsepower.
Performance
The RAV4 Prime has several drive modes to help you get the most out of your drives. Leaving it in the standard drive mode gives you a seamless driving experience, but it also includes a full EV mode and charge setting as well. The vehicle comes standard with a continuously variable automatic transmission as well as all-wheel drive. Even though it's an SUV, the RAV4 Prime has acceleration comparable to the Toyota Supra sports car, in that it can go from zero to 60 mph in just 5.7 seconds.
Interior
Like other RAV4s, the RAV4 Prime has a high-quality interior with many soft touches. To help you enjoy your quiet ride, the cabin has soundproofing. Both rows of seats offer plenty of leg and headroom, and the vehicle's wide door openings make getting in and out easy. The SE includes cloth upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Opting for the XSE adds synthetic leather upholstery and an available heated steering wheel and rear seats.
The RAV4 Prime's cargo capacity is comparable to its gas-only counterpart. You get 33.5 cubic feet of space behind the second row and 63.2 cubic feet of space when you fold down these seats. To help you transport longer items, the SUV's second row folds nearly flat.
A user-friendly infotainment system rests atop the SUV's dashboard and allows you to easily view and operate the system. Its standard 8-inch touch-screen display comes paired with a Wi-Fi hot spot, Bluetooth, five USB ports, and satellite radio. You can also integrate your smartphone thanks to Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa connectivity. Available upgrades include a 9-inch touch-screen display, navigation, and wireless device charging.
Safety Features
Toyota doesn't mess around when it comes to safety features, and the RAV4 Prime boasts plenty of standard ones. Some of the features found in the equipped Safety Sense package include road sign recognition, lane-keep assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and adaptive cruise control. Available upgrades include a surround-view parking camera system, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and a full-color head-up display.
