Toyota's RAV4 continues to please drivers whether they need a family hauler, a reliable commuter, or an adventure-ready SUV. A well-equipped base trim starts the lineup which includes models with impressive tech features, comfortable interiors, and off-road equipment, so there's a RAV4 out there for you. The 2021 model carries over from last year with only one major change, the addition of a new exterior paint color. Here's a look at the 2021 Toyota RAV4.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The RAV4 lineup starts with the LE, which has 17-inch steel wheels, roof rails, LED headlights, and rear privacy glass. Step up to the XLE for 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, automatic headlights, and heated side mirrors or to the XLE Premium for 19-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof, a raised suspension, and a power liftgate. The sporty Adventure trim comes with taller roof rails, and it adds fender flares. If you plan on driving over rough terrain, the TRD Off-Road comes with all-terrain tires, and it adds an off-road-tuned suspension. At the top of the lineup, you'll find the Limited, which adds the features of the XLE Premium and chrome exterior trim elements for a sleek look.
Engine (Power)
Power for the regular RAV4 comes from a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine with 203 horsepower. It works with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and it comes standard with front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is offered as an option for all trims except the Adventure and TRD Off-Road. These two trims come standard with an upgraded version of the all-wheel drive system for even better traction over rough terrain.
Performance
The four-cylinder engine gets the RAV4 up to speed quickly and efficiently, while the transmission delivers smooth shifts. The sport mode makes the throttle respond even quicker and improves the transmission's performance for a more engaging driving experience. Drivers will appreciate the responsive steering, and the size of the RAV4 makes it easy to maneuver in tight spaces.
Interior
Five people can comfortably ride in the RAV4. The cabin has an open and spacious feel, and you'll find high-quality materials throughout. In the back, you'll get over 37 cubic feet of storage space in the cargo area when you have the rear seats up, and this can increase to almost 70 cubic feet when you fold the rear seats down. A 7-inch touch screen comes in the base trim along with Toyota's infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An 8-inch touch screen is an upgrade for the Adventure and the Limited, and the Limited also gets a navigation system and a premium JBL stereo system.
Safety Features
All of the 2021 RAV4 models come with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0. This feature groups safety systems such as a traffic sign reader, full-speed radar cruise control, lane departure warning with a steering assist system, automatic high-beam headlights, lane tracing assist, and a pre-collision system that has both pedestrian detection and automatic braking. Some additional safety features that you can add include front and rear parking assist with automated braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
