Why is My Car Leaking Water?

This could be for a number of reasons. If you notice your vehicle leaking water, don’t be alarmed. Most water leaks are harmless, however, there are a few that could indicate a leaking auto fluid reservoir or another underlying issue.

Learn more about how to tell when a car leaking water is normal, as well as when one of the technicians at our DARCARS Toyota of Frederick service center may need to take a closer look.

Identifying the Cause of Leaking Water

First, you’ll want to determine whether it’s water or automotive liquid leaking from under a car. Sometimes it may seem like water, but it’s another fluid. It can be hard to see the color of the liquid once it hits the ground. Use the following tips to find out if your car is leaking water:

  • Place a sheet of paper under the leak. If the liquid that drips onto it is yellow, green, or blue, your car is leaking coolant. You can always confirm a coolant leak by checking your vehicle’s coolant levels. If they have dropped, you’ll want to order a replacement reservoir from our parts department.
  • Some leaking water is normal. Your vehicle’s air conditioning and engine systems will create condensation that could be the cause of water leaking from under a car. It’s also normal for water to drip from the tailpipe as there’s likely to be exhaust condensation as well.
  • Lots of water and white smoke coming from the exhaust pipe? This could mean your vehicle has blown a gasket, which causes coolant to burn along with fuel. You’ll want to have your vehicle checked out by a professional immediately.
  • Leak near the front tires? If the paper placed under your vehicle has a blue color from the leak, this means your car is leaking windshield wiper fluid. Sometimes cold weather can cause the windshield wiper fluid to freeze and crack the fluid reservoir as it expands.

If you can’t seem to find the source or cause of the leak, rely on our team to get to the source of the problem. With our available service specials, you can save more while getting the services you need.
